What you'll learn.
Preparation — what to think about before the door closes
The work that determines whether the conversation goes well happens before it starts. We cover the practitioner's pre-conversation checklist: intent vs impact, mutual purpose, the facts vs the story you're telling about the facts, and the safety conditions that have to be in place for honesty to be possible.
Holding the conversation when emotions rise
Specific techniques for staying composed when the other person isn't — recognising silence, sarcasm and violence patterns, restoring safety mid-conversation, and the language that turns a defensive reaction into a productive one. Lots of practice; not much theory.
Closing with commitment, not just closure
Every crucial conversation that doesn't end with clear who-does-what-by-when commitments is half-finished. We work through the techniques for landing decisions, documenting them appropriately, and following up in a way that builds rather than damages the relationship.
