Active listening and follow-up technique
The listening disciplines that distinguish interviewers who hear from interviewers who collect material. Reflective listening, calibrated follow-up questions, the use of silence, recognising avoidance, and the techniques for getting past rehearsed answers to the underlying truth.
Documentation, evaluation and the defensible decision
Note-taking discipline during the interview, evaluation rubrics that prevent the halo effect and other common biases, calibration sessions between multiple interviewers, and the documentation patterns that make hiring (or other) decisions defensible if later challenged.
