Course overview.
We work the proven structural patterns (the pyramid principle, BLUF, situation-complication-resolution), the executive-summary discipline (the part of the report that decides whether anything else gets read), and the editorial craft — clarity, concision and confidence — that distinguishes serious professional reporting from competent-but-skippable writing.
Who it's for.
Analysts, consultants, civil servants, researchers, professional advisors, project managers and anyone whose role involves producing reports for senior, time-pressured readers. Particularly useful for professionals whose reports are clear to them but consistently get pushed back as 'too long' or 'unclear about the ask'.
What you'll learn.
Structure — the architecture of a report that gets read
The pyramid principle (Minto), BLUF (Bottom Line Up Front) for the audience that may only read the first paragraph, the situation-complication-resolution opener, and the section-structure choices that work for different report types — analytical, evaluative, recommending, informing. The disciplines borrowed from the better consultancies.
The executive summary as the most important page
Most executive summaries fail because they summarise — they describe what's in the report rather than landing the conclusion. We work the structural disciplines of a genuine executive summary: what the answer is, why it's the answer, what the reader should do about it, and the calibrated language that signals confidence without overclaiming.
Editorial craft — the line-level disciplines
The sentence-level habits of serious report writing: ruthless cutting, sentence-rhythm management, the active-voice default, the disciplined use of evidence vs assertion, and the editorial passes (structural, argument, line, copy) that distinguish polished reports from posted-first-draft ones.
