Taguchi Design of Experiments
The Taguchi approach to design of experiments is the engineering discipline that produces products and processes robust to the variation they'll inevitably encounter — rather than products that work brilliantly on the test bench and fall over in service. This one-day intensive covers Taguchi's methodology with the engineering judgement to apply it on real problems.
Course overview.
Built around Taguchi's foundational concepts (signal-to-noise ratio, parameter design, tolerance design), the orthogonal-array experimental designs that compress hundreds of full-factorial trials into manageable ones, and the analysis disciplines that distinguish robust engineering from one-time optimisation. Worked examples from automotive, electronics and process manufacturing.
Who it's for.
Quality engineers, design engineers, manufacturing engineers, Six Sigma Black Belt candidates and continuous improvement professionals. Particularly useful for engineering teams developing new products or processes where field-condition robustness matters as much as in-spec performance.
What you'll learn.
Robust design and the Taguchi philosophy
Taguchi's quality philosophy — the loss function, the distinction between noise factors and control factors, and the parameter-design approach that targets robustness to noise rather than removal of noise. The foundational concepts that distinguish Taguchi from classical DOE.
Orthogonal arrays and experiment design
The orthogonal-array experimental designs (L4, L8, L9, L12, L16, L18, L27) that make Taguchi DOE practical, the techniques for assigning factors and interactions, and the design choices that determine whether your experiment will produce useful answers or expensive noise.
Analysis, signal-to-noise and the engineering call
ANOVA on Taguchi designs, signal-to-noise ratio interpretation, factor-effect analysis, and the engineering-judgement disciplines for confirming the optimal setting and committing to it. Including the honest treatment of when the Taguchi approach is the right tool and when classical DOE serves better.
