Course overview.
We focus on the four conversation types managers report as hardest: underperformance, peer-to-peer conflict, customer disputes, and personal disclosure (mental health, bereavement, capability). For each, you'll work through a structured approach, observe a demonstration, then practise with peer feedback so you leave with muscle memory, not just theory.
Who it's for.
Line managers, team leads, HR business partners, project managers and customer-facing professionals who need to navigate emotionally charged conversations as part of doing their job well. Particularly useful for newer managers, or experienced managers who recognise they've been avoiding a conversation that needs to happen.
What you'll learn.
The architecture of a difficult conversation
Every challenging conversation has the same underlying structure — opening frame, fact statement, impact statement, listening, joint problem-solving, commitments. You'll learn the practitioner's template and the language patterns that work at each stage.
Conversation types and their playbooks
Performance, conflict, customer dispute and disclosure conversations have different patterns and different traps. We work through each type with a demonstration, the practitioner's notes, and a practice scenario you'll run with peer feedback.
Recovery, follow-up and documentation
What to do when the conversation goes wrong — and the documentation discipline that protects everyone (including you) when it's gone right. Plus the follow-up rhythm that turns one good conversation into sustained behaviour change.
