Hands-on throughout, working through real diagramming briefs — a swim-lane process flow, a network topology with linked data, an organisation chart driven from Excel, a floor plan with layered detail. By the end of the day you'll be producing professional diagrams quickly and confidently.
Who it's for.
Business analysts, process designers, IT architects, project managers, facilities managers, engineers and anyone who communicates with diagrams as a regular part of their work. Particularly useful if you've been getting by in PowerPoint and your diagrams have started to outgrow it.
What you'll learn.
Shapes, stencils and the Visio way
The fundamental mental model for Visio: stencils, masters, instances and the snap/glue/connect behaviours that make diagrams maintainable. We work through the standard stencils — flowchart, BPMN, UML, network, floor plan — and the customisation that gets you to your house style.
Data-linked diagrams
Visio's most under-used capability — linking shape data to external sources (Excel, SQL, SharePoint) so the diagram reflects live data rather than a snapshot. Org charts that update from HR, network diagrams that show live status, asset maps that surface inventory.
Layers, themes and production output
Layered diagrams for complex systems, theme management for consistency across deliverables, page-setup and printing for large-format output, plus the export pipeline (PDF, SVG, web) that gets your diagrams into the documents and presentations they need to live in.
