Course overview.
Drawing on Kotter's eight-stage model, the more recent research on change leadership (Heath brothers' Switch, Beer and Nohria's Theory E/Theory O), and case studies from successful and unsuccessful UK transformation efforts. The day focuses heavily on the leadership communication craft that holds a change effort together when the energy starts to drain.
Who it's for.
Senior executives, transformation directors, programme sponsors, and senior PMO leaders accountable for major change programmes. Particularly useful at the awkward middle of a change effort — when initial enthusiasm has worn off and the harder work of sustained execution has just become visible.
What you'll learn.
Diagnosis and the case for change
Reading organisational readiness, identifying the change archetype you're actually facing, and constructing the case for change at the level of evidence that a senior team will actually act on. The diagnostic disciplines that prevent change leadership from becoming a series of confident-sounding initiatives that quietly miss the target.
Narrative architecture and through-cycle communication
The story-telling architecture that holds a multi-year change effort together — strategic narrative design, the cadence and structure of executive communication, the techniques for maintaining credibility when delivery is slower than promised, and the language of honest leadership through the messy middle.
Sustaining the effort beyond the launch
The leadership behaviours that distinguish change programmes that take hold from ones that quietly regress — early-win management, coalition expansion, structural reinforcement, and the executive practice of keeping the change on the strategic agenda when the next quarter's results have moved everyone's attention.
